Le futunien (autonyme : fakafutuna) est une langue de la famille des langues polynésiennes, plus précisément du sous-groupe du polynésien proprement dit, branche occidentale. Il est parlé par 4 500 personnes à Futuna, en 2008, et environ 5 000 en Nouvelle-Calédonie d'après un recensement de 1996. C'est une langue ergative de type VSO. Le futunien est proche du samoan ainsi que du wallisien.
Le futunien est parlé par la quasi-totalité des habitants de Futuna (îles Horn), en Polynésie, et par les nombreux émigrés en Nouvelle-Calédonie (région du Grand Nouméa et de Thio), ainsi que par les Futuniens installés en France métropolitaine. Il est également parlé à Wallis par une centaine de Futuniens installés sur l'île2 et les élèves futuniens pensionnaires du lycée de Wallis et Futuna.
Futunian (autonym: fakafutuna) is a language of the Polynesian language family, more precisely of the subgroup of Polynesian proper, western branch. It is spoken by 4,500 people in Futuna, in 2008, and around 5,000 in New Caledonia according to a 1996 census. It is an ergative language of the VSO type. Futunian is close to Samoan as well as Wallisian.
Futunian is spoken by almost all the inhabitants of Futuna (Horn Islands), in Polynesia, and by the many emigrants in New Caledonia (region of Greater Noumea and Thio), as well as by Futunians living in metropolitan France. It is also spoken in Wallis by a hundred Futunians living on the island2 and the Futunian students in high school in Wallis and Futuna.
